Bloody Marys are a brunch staple for a reason! They are perfect any time of the year! Serve them for a holiday brunch or on a summer weekend. The tomato juice cures all. If anything will cure a hangover it's a greasy breakfast combined with the fresh punch of a tomato cocktail. This Mexican version is even easier to drink because it uses beer and tequila instead of straight vodka!

This version also has a nice spicy kick to it. The lime juice also adds a nice zest that will compliment any spicy breakfast egg dish! This cocktail is a lot easier to drink than a regular Bloody Mary cocktail. It is a little lighter due to the addition of the Mexican Lager and doesn’t have that thick tomato texture that some Bloody Marys have. It is kind of like how sangria is lighter than having a bottle of wine. Often recipes for Micheladas use Clamato juice instead of regular tomato juice. You can definitely use Clamato juice in this recipe if you wish, it is a bit saltier and even lighter than regular tomato juice!

If you want to add even more of a kick to this recipe, add a little cayenne to the salt rim or add a little bit to the tomato juice itself. You can also add some traditional celery salt or Worcestershire sauce to the tomato juice as well. This will make it taste more similar to the classic Bloody Mary. Or, for a more purist taste, try the stripped-down Chelada.

I like using Modelo Especial as the Mexican Lager in this recipe, however, you can use any Mexican Lager you wish. Other ones that work well are Corona, Dos Equis, Tecate, or Pacifico.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons kosher salt

  • 1 tablespoon chili powder

  • 2/3 cup V8 juice or other tomato juice

  • 1/4 cup freshly squeezed lime juice

  • 2/3 can Mexican lager (Corona, Modelo Especial, Dos Equis, Tecate, Pacifico)

  • 2 ounces tequila, optional

  • 4 drops hot sauce

  • 1/2 teaspoon celery salt, optional

  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

  • Lime wedges, for serving

Steps to Make It

  1. Gather the ingredients.

  2. Wet rims of two cocktail glasses using sliced lime.

  3. Mix together coarse salt and chili powder in a low plate. Dip rims of glasses into the salt/spice mixture, completely coating each rim.

  4. Fill each glass with ice.

  5. In another container (preferably a measuring cup or cocktail shaker), mix or shake together tomato juice, lime juice, tequila, and hot sauce until completely combined. If you are adding celery salt or Worcestershire sauce, you can add it at this time as well.

  6. Divide tomato mixture between 2 glasses. Top off each glass with Mexican lager. Stir gently. Add lime wedges as a garnish to rim of each glass.
