It's easy to bake a beautiful loaf of bread even if you don't have a packet of yeast in the house. All you need is five simple ingredients, including a can of your favorite beer. Since beer is brewed with yeast, it helps the bread rise and there's no kneading required. Besides the beer you will need self-rising flour, sugar, salt, and butter. If you don’t have any self-rising flour on hand, substitute an equal amount of all-purpose flour plus 1 tablespoon baking powder and an additional 1/2 teaspoon salt.
Ingredients
-
1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted, more for the pan
-
3 cups self-rising flour
-
1/4 cup sugar
-
1/2 teaspoon salt
-
1 (12-ounce) can beer
Steps to Make It
-
Gather the ingredients. Preheat oven to 350 F. Grease a 9 x 5-inch loaf pan and set aside.
-
In a large mixing bowl, combine the self-rising flour, sugar, and salt.
-
Pour in the beer and stir to combine.
-
Spoon the batter into the prepared loaf pan. Pour the warm, melted butter carefully over the top of the batter. It will not be absorbed into the batter until the baking begins.
-
Bake for 45 to 50 minutes, or until golden brown. Insert a toothpick or metal skewer to the center of the loaf. If it comes out dry and clean, it is done.
-
Cool in the pan on a wire rack for 15 minutes.
-
Holding a wire rack against the top of the loaf and quickly, but carefully turn it upside down so the top of the loaf is on the bottom. Set aside to cool. This will allow the butter to drift back into the loaf.
-
Once cool, slice and serve. Enjoy with a pat of butter and your favorite beer!
Tip
- This bread can be made in a loaf pan and sliced or it can be prepared in a muffin tin for individual-sized beer bread rolls. All you have to do is pour the batter into lined muffin tins filling each cup about 2/3 full. Brush the top of each one with the melted butter and bake for about 20 minutes.
Recipe Variations
Once you realize how easy it is to bake beer bread, its fun to start adding some additional mix-ins to make a variety of flavors and textures.
- Oregano Beer Bread: Mix in 1/2 cup finely chopped fresh oregano leaves into the batter when you add the beer.
- Bacon Cheddar Beer Bread: Mix in 1 cup of grated cheddar cheese and 1/4 cup chopped crisped bacon into the batter when you add the beer.
- Tex-Mex Beer Bread: Mix in 1/2 cup cooked corn kernels and 2 tablespoons diced jalapeno peppers into the batter when you add the beer. You can even make this using a Mexican beer for even more flavor fun.
