Sometimes a sweet craving hits, but you don’t have the time or the energy to bake up an entire dessert. Plus, there can be too many leftovers after baking a treat fit for a crowd. The answer is a quick and easy dessert in a mug.

This blueberry crumble in a mug uses ingredients you likely already have on hand, as well as either fresh, seasonal berries or frozen fruit. The blueberries are warmed in a mug along with some brown sugar and a little cornstarch. This sweetens the berries and creates that delicious sauce we love in a warm berry crumble. The crumble oat topping becomes perfectly warm and bubbly in the microwave in a matter of minutes.

Microwave mug desserts are a great option for kids who are interested in baking since there’s no oven or stove involved. Plus, there are minimal dirty dishes, making for super easy clean-up. This single-serving dessert is great on its own or it can be topped with a dollop of whipped cream or even a small scoop of ice cream.

  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar, divided

  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch

  • 3 tablespoons rolled oats

  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

  • 1 teaspoon butter

Tips

  • If you use fresh blueberries it may take less time for the filling to thicken up. Microwave in increments so you can check often.
  • Since microwave strengths and mug sizes vary, you might be concerned that the warm berry filling will bubble up and spill over while heating. For easy cleanup, simply place the mug on a microwave-safe plate.
  • Use care when taking the mug out of the microwave between steps and when ready to top and serve. Microwave strengths vary and the mug can become very hot. Use oven mitts or a thick kitchen towel to protect your hands.
